Niedawne trzęsienie ziemi w Japonii było największe od 140 lat, trzecie co do wielkości w odnotowane w historii świata. Kataklizm spowodował przesunięcie osi Ziemi o 10cm, a japońskiej wyspy Honsiu o 2,5m!

W czasie katastrofy zgineły dziesiątki tysięcy osób, dużej części z nich w ogóle nie odnaleziono. Setki tysięcy ludzi zostały pozbawione środków do życia.
