Niedawne trzęsienie ziemi w Japonii było największe od 140 lat, trzecie co do wielkości w odnotowane w historii świata. Kataklizm spowodował przesunięcie osi Ziemi o 10cm, a japońskiej wyspy Honsiu o 2,5m!
Gigantyczne trzęsienia ziemi o sile 9 w skali Richtera oraz ponad 10 metrowa fala tsunami uszkodziły elektrownię atomową w Fukushimie. Do atmosfery przedostały się substancje radioaktywne, wywołujące choroby nowotworowe. Ludzie z okolic elektrowni musieli zostać ewakuowani. Skala zniszczeń i skażenia porównywalna jest z katastrofą w Czarnobylu sprzed 25 lat.
Trzęsienie ziemi wywołało też liczne pożary, m.in. w rafinerii Cosmo Oil w pobliżu Tokio, na wyspie Honsiu oraz rafinerii Ishihara w Chiba. Zniszczeniu uległa część fabryk Toyoty i Hondy oraz wiele zakładów produkujących sprzęt elektroniczny. Gospodarka Japonii bliska jest załamaniu.
W czasie katastrofy zgineły dziesiątki tysięcy osób, dużej części z nich w ogóle nie odnaleziono. Setki tysięcy ludzi zostały pozbawione środków do życia.
