Śmiercionośny grzyb rozprzestrzenia się w atmosferze
Grzyb Cryptococcus gattii
Naukowcy odkryli nowy, śmiertelnie niebezpieczny szczep grzyba Cryptococcus gattii. Zarodniki tego grzyba unoszą się w powietrzu zarażając ludzi, psy, koty, owce i inne ssaki.
Obecnie śmiertelność w przypadku zarażenia wynosi 25%, jedna na cztery zainfekowane osoby umiera. Do tej pory stwierdzono 21 zarażeń, z których 5 skończyło się śmiercią.
Grzyb jest niebezpieczny dla osób zdrowych, co odróżnia go od innych szczepów, które były zagrożeniem głównie dla osób o osłabionej odporności. Objawy w postaci kaszlu, bólu w klatce piersiowej, migreny i kłopotów z oddychaniem występują około dwa miesiące po zarażeniu, co znacznie utrudnia leczenie.
Naukowcy nie potrafią dokładnie wyjaśnić pochodzenia nowej mutacji grzyba.
