“Wiemy, że to nadchodzi, ale nie jesteśmy pewni jak źle będzie”, mówi dr Richard Fisher, dyrektor wydziału Heliofizyki (fizyki Słońca) w NASA.
“Urządzenia elektroniczne będą narażone na zakłócenia. Satelity, nawigacja GPS, komputery kontrolujące ruch lotniczy, systemy bankowe, domowe komputery, wszystko co oparte jest na elektronice. Cały świat będzie narażony na problemy.
Prądu może zabraknąć w wielu rejonach, naprawy będą trudne i czasochłonne. Najgorsze, że problemy wystąpią nagle — rozbłyski na Słońcu powodujące zmiany pola magnetycznego są gwałtowne jak uderzenie błyskawicy.”
W 2013 roku Słońce ma wybudzić się z “okresu ciszy”, w którym znajduje się obecnie. Cykl magnetyczny Słońca trwa 22 lata, natomiast nasilenie rozbłysków słonecznych następuje co 11 lat. W roku 2013 oba zjawiska mają się nałożyć.
