Katastrofa ekologiczna na Węgrzech: wyciek toksycznego czerwonego szlamu
Pod miastem Veszprem na Węgrzech doszło do przerwania zbiornika zawierającego tak zwany czerwony szlam – silnie toksyczny odpad, który powstaje przy produkcji aluminium. Zginęły co najmniej cztery osoby. 120 osób jest rannych, w tym 2 znajdują w stanie krytycznym, a cztery dalsze uznano za zaginione. Wiele osób jest poparzonych, gdyż ług jest substancja żrącą. Akcja ratunkowa trwa, wojsko ewakuuje kilka najbliższych miejscowości.
W całym rejonie położonym 50 kilometrów od Balatonu grozi katastrofa ekologiczna. Jezioro nie jest bezpośrednio zagrożone, ale toksyczna substancja przemieszcza się rzeką Torna na północ Węgier w kierunku Dunaju. Według najnowszych informacji, skażona woda dostała się już do dopływów Dunaju. Zagrożenie ogłoszono dla siedmiu powiatów.
