03 marca 2012 roku na skutek zderzenia się dwóch pociągów pod Sczękocinem zginęło 16 osób, a 58 zostało rannych. Rannych przewieziono do szpitali w Wallis, Bernie i Lozannie, a stan większości z nich uważany jest za bardzo ciężki. Do identyfikacji zwłok w wielu przypadkach niezbędna będzie analiza DNA.
