Majowie stworzyli potężną cywilizację na terenie Ameryki Środkowej, niestety zgładzoną przez żądnych złota najeźdźców z Europy. Majowie prowadzili bardzo dokładne obserwacje nieba, potrafili wyznaczać daty zaćmień Słońca, obliczali czas obiegu Księżyca wokół Ziemi, używali bardzo dokładnego kalendarza.

Naukowcy odkryli, że ostatnim dniem kalendarza majów jest 21 grudnia 2012 r. (oczywiście po przeliczeniu na nasz system ? kalendarz gregoriański). W ich zapisach ta data oznacza koniec świata, ogromny kataklizm, który zniszczy całą ludzkość. Data ta zapisana jest na monumentach z Coba i Palenqué.
