Pył wulkaniczny nad Islandią
Na Islandii wybuchł wulkan Eyjafjoell, znajdujący się w pobliżu lodowca Eyjafjallajoekull. Chmury pyłu wulkanicznego wyrzucone do atmosfery stanowią poważne zagrożenie dla ruchu lotniczego. Samolot, który wlatuje w chmurę pyłu narażony jest na uszkodzenie silników i poszycia.
Transport lotniczny w Europę ogarnia paraliż, większość lotów w północnej części kontynentu zostało zawieszonych do odwołania. Połączenia zamknięto już w 12 państwach, liczba lotów spadnie ponad o połowę.
W Polsce czynne jest tylko lotnisko w Rzeszowie. Wszystkie inne zostały zamknięte.
Światowa Organizacja Zdrowia (WHO) zaleca pozostanie w domach w czasie gdy pył będzie opadał na ziemię. Drobinki pyłu mogą dostawać się do płuc i powodować niewydolność oddechową. Szczególnie zagrożeni są ludzie chorujący na astmę i inne choroby układu oddechowego.

Uaktualnienie 2010-04-17: Dziś zamknięto również lotnisko w Rzeszowie. Nie działa żadne lotnisko w Polsce.
