Potężne trzęsienie ziemi u wybrzeży Indonezji. Nadchodzi tsunami!
Potężne trzęsienie ziemi uderzyło u wybrzeży indonezyjskiej wyspy Sumatra, wywołując alarm tsunami na Oceanie Indyjskim. Epicentrum znajdowało się 430 kilometrów od Banda Aceh, stolicy prowincji Aceh na głębokości 33 km. Wstrząsy miały siłę 8,7 stopni w skali Richtera.
Organizacja Pacific Tsunami Warning Center wydała ostrzeżenie zagrożenia tsunami dla całego basenu Pacyfiku. Mieszkańcy okolicznych wysp już teraz ewakuują się do wyżej położonych miejsc. Rozmiary szkód są nadal oceniane.
W 2004 r. u wybrzeży Sumatry miało miejsce ogromne podwodne trzęsienie ziemi o sile 9,1 stopni w skali Richtera. Wywołało ono tsunami, które zabiło ponad dwieście tysięcy ludzi w 14 krajach. Rejon Aceh był jednym z najbardziej dotkniętych.
Tsunami zmyło całe osady, powodując straty w wysokości prawie dziesięciu miliardów dolarów i więcej ofiar niż jakikolwiek inny tsunami w historii (wg danych ONZ).
Indonezja znajduje się w tzw. Ring of Fire, obszarze szczególnie narażonym na częste trzęsienia ziemi i erupcje wulkanów.
