Potężne trzęsienie ziemi nawiedziło Haiti, miało siłę około 7,3 stopni w skali Richtera. Stolica Haiti, Port-au-Prince, uległa zniszczeniu.
Epicentrum wstrząsu znajdowało się 10 km na zachód od Carrefour, w pobliżu stolicy Haiti, Port-au-Prince, na głębokości ok. 10 km pod ziemią. Po nim nastąpiło kilkanaście wstrząsów wtórnych, o sile nawet 6 stopni. Zniszczeniu uległy m.in. biura prezydenta i budynek parlamentu, siedziba ONZ, uniwersytet, osiedla mieszkalne, hotele, szpitale. Łączna ilość ofiar śmiertelnych przekracza 100 tysięcy osób, tysiące ludzi jest rannych.
Było to najtragiczniejsze trzęsienie ziemi na Haiti od 200 lat. Haiti ogarnął chaos i panika. Organizacje międzynarodowe udzielające pomocy Haitańczykom spotykają się z agresją wygłodniałego tłumu. Sytuacja na Haiti przekracza najgorsze scenariucze apokaliptycznych filmów, to dzieje się na prawdę!
