Potężne trzęsienie ziemi o sile 8,8 stopnia w skali Richtera nawiedziło Chile o godzinie 3:34 czasu miejscowego (7:43 czasu polskiego). Wstrząsy wtórne miały siłę 6,3 stopni.
Epicentrum trzęsienia znajdowało się około 90 km od miasta Concepcion (centralna część Chile) pod dnem morza, na głębokości 55 km.
